What End of Year Decline?

Written by Joy Dembo. Posted in Archive

I have been in the recruitment services business for over 30 years and from day one I was educated about the mysterious “end of year decline”!

The end of year decline traditionally begins about mid October and lasts until about mid January.  It is the time when recruitment slows down because the number of good quality candidates decreases dramatically, as people are loathe to resign from their jobs as they are waiting for bonuses and annual leave.

But, this year has been very atypical.  After having a really quiet August and September, things started becoming chaotic in October and I am so busy at the moment, I don’t know what to do first!

Is this just co-incidence or is the economy going through a metamorphosis of sorts?

I know the number of candidates currently on the market can partially be attributed to the massive unemployment rate, but many of the people who are applying for jobs are, in fact, employed!

Are people so “gatvol” with their jobs that they don’t mind sacrificing their bonuses?  Or perhaps fewer companies are giving their employees Xmas bonuses?  Maybe people can’t afford to go on holiday so they are using their leave to find a new position?

Any opinions?

A Day at the Races

Who goes to the races?

Not me, as a rule, but my brother recently bought a couple of race horses and since one of them was racing today at Turfontein, he sponsored a table in the new Elevation Room and invited us to join him.

Wow... what a fabulous day we had!

We were treated like royalty, wined and dined and entertained in decadent luxury, overlooking the race track!

Since the Charity Mile was run today to raise money for various charities, there were numerous celebrities there too and I managed to twist my nephew's arm to get Schalk Burger and Butch James' autographs for my son.

I also managed to lose all the money I went with, but it was worth it! LOL!

Soooo... if you are ever invited to attend the races in style, say YES! You wont regret it

A Little Piece of Heaven

Written by Joy Dembo. Posted in Archive

Three or four times a year we mange to escape the ratrace and enjoy a week of timesharing in Umhlanga Rocks and iti s there that I have found my little piece of heaven!

Although badly damaged in the recent floods, the Umhlanga Beach Path is like Paradise to me.  I can enjoy a quiet stroll or brisk walk along the path in relative safety and lose myself in a world of sea, sun and fun!

The roar of the waves breaking as they near the shore, the little children playing in the surf, dogs of all shapes and sizes playing on the beaches or walking with their owners on the beach path, the smell of sun tan lotion, the heavenly aroma of food coming from the restaurant or the Life Saver’s Club, the smell of the ocean, the breeze and the sun beating down on this idyllic vacation spot!

And, then there is the mystery of the rocks peeping out of water, the Lighthouse watching over the ocean like a Sentry at its post, the Zulu wares that are being touted along the path, the beautiful shells glistening in the sun and the surfers bobbing up and down in the swells.

Even the hum and chaos of the construction currently in progress on the pier and apartment complexes long the route cant mar this beautiful place for me!

All too soon it is time to come back to Gauteng, but as I sit at my computer working, I close my eyes and let my mind wander to that little piece of heaven!

Roll on December so I can return to Paradise.
