Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom

Written by Joy Dembo on . Posted in 2013

Seldom has a movie that has been anticipated for so long, lived up to expectations, but Long Walk to Freedom matched and exceeded my expectations.

There are no words to describe how touching and powerful this movie is!  And, even though we all know Madiba’s story, this 2.5 hour movie is totally riveting.

I laughed, I cried and I marvelled at the phenomenon that is Nelson Mandela.

Rust and Bone

A beautiful romantic drama.

I am not a lover of foreign language films, but Rust and Bone is an exception, because it is an exceptional movie!  The story is so powerful and the cast gave such incredible performances that I hardly noticed the sub titles.  I was that engrossed in the beautiful story of Ali and Stephanie.

Rust and Bone is a French- Belgian film which tells the story of Ali (Played by Matthias Schoenaerts) and 5-year old son, Sam, (played by Armand Verdure) who arrive in Southern France, to live with his estranged sister, Anna.   Money is tight all round, but Anna takes them in and quickly warms to the lovable Sam.

The Purge

Don’t Miss The Purge!

If you have ever wanted to kill someone or even beat them up, watch The Purge and maybe you wont be so keen on violence any more ;-)

This science fiction thriller had me on the edge of my seat, chewing my expensive acrylic nails off, from start to finish!

It’s the year 2022 and crime and unemployment in the USA have hit an all time low, and the Government attributes this to the Annual Purge.

Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass 2 is so much fun!

Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to Kick-Ass, is a super hero action comedy movie, written by Mark Millar and John Romita, directed by Jeff Wadlow and produced by Mathew Vaughn, in conjunction with Universal Pictures.

Dave Lizewski (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) has decided to retire from the super hero business, but his normal, mundane existence is getting to him, so he approaches Mindy Macready (played by Chloë Grace Moretz) , a real life super hero and asks her to train him to become just as effective a crime fighter as she is. She is sceptical at first, but the 15 year old teen gives in and the training begins.

Pain & Gain

Pain and Gain is a hysterically funny movie, based on the not so funny true story, written by Pete Collins.  The characters in the movie are comically brainless, and because of their utter stupidity end up torturing and murdering a number of wealthy people, so they can live the “American Dream”.  The original plan was to extort money from their victims, but when you are dealing with perpetrators who are all brawn and no brains, things can, and did, go horribly wrong.

Song for Marion

Song for Marion – So poignant!

Having two elderly parents myself, I could really relate to this movie.  It is sad, but heartwarming, and I laughed and cried.  I came out of this movie feeling pensive and it was on my mind for some time thereafter.

Song for Marion is a British Comedy/drama and stars accomplished old timers, Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp, brilliantly complemented by Gemma Arterton, who all gave sterling performances.

Star Trek

I am officially a “Trekkie”, after watching “Star Trek Into Darkness”

When Star Trek was seriously HOT, in my long-forgotten youth, I really want much of a “Trekkie”.  I was far more of a Star Wars fan, but somehow this movie just got under my skin!  I was sold from beginning to end and didn’t even notice how long it was, as I was having so much fun.

360 – Watch the pieces of the puzzle fall into place!

360 is a very cleverly written movie which reminded me of opening a 1500 piece puzzle, thinking you will never ever complete it, and then slowly but surely, the pieces fall into place and you see the completed picture in front of you!  And you walk away feeling a deep sense of satisfaction.

Trishna is a tragic and thought-provoking movie, based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, Tess of the d’Urbavilles, and directed by acclaimed director, Michael Winterbottom.

Young, beautiful, innocent and protected, Trishna (played by Freido Pinto) comes from a poor rural background, but works part time in a hotel in Rajastan, on weekends.  It is there that she meets wealthy, good looking, British businessman, Jay Singh

Little One

Little One is a heartbreaking, yet touching South African Movie

To say this movie is enjoyable is not strictly accurate as the movie deals with the very enjoyable topic of child rape, but I can confidently say that this movie is captivating.

To be honest, this is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.  It embraced my soul and left me pondering its message for days.

Set in a Johannesburg township, the movie begins when a couple of kids playing in the veld come across the near dead body of a little girl.
