Hail Caesar is so witty and absolutely hilarious!
This brilliant comedy, set in early fifties Hollywood, was written, produced and directed by the Coen Brothers, known for memorable blockbusters like True Grit, Intolerable Cruelty and Millers Crossing.
The movie centres around Eddie Mannix (Played by James Brolin), who heads production at Capitol Pictures and doubles as a “Fixer”, putting out fires and keeping the real life escapades of his leading actors and actresses out of the media. The hilarious Scandal sheet columnist sisters Thora and Thessaly Thacker (both played by Tilda Swinton) are an ever present thorn in his side.
The studio is filming a high budget epic titled “Hail Caesar”. Set in ancient Rome, the leading man is Baird Whitlock (Played by George Clooney). When he mysteriously disappears, the studio is baffled, but when a ransom note arrives from a curious Communist group, calling themselves The Future, Mannix takes responsibility for getting his important cast member back on set pronto!
Meanwhile, besides the main plot, there are a number of musicals, featuring tap dancing and synchronised swimming, westerns, and old style Hollywoood dramas being filmed. The scenes are filled with blunders and an enormous amount of hilarity which will have you rolling in the aisles.
The all-star cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand and Channing Tatum.
The movie is so authentic… even Mannix’s PA reminds me of the typical 50’s PA/Shorthand Typist my mom used to be, at her boss’s beck and call all day long. And the costumes and sets will lead you down memory lane to everything that epitomised the fifties and post WWII America.
The film is currently showing at cinemas countrywide and is classified 10, however in my opinion, it’s not a movie that kids will relate to or enjoy.
Don’t miss this one!
