I’ve never been a fan of musicals, but I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this movie.
The movie is a sequel/prequel to the original Mama Mia. It flashes from present day, with Sophie Sheridan planning a grand reopening of her late mother’s quaint hotel in Greece, to the past, with Donna Sheridan, Sophie’s mother’s graduation and arrival on the island, and her subsequent decision to stay there.
We learn early in the movie that Donna Sheridan has been dead for about a year, although we never find out how she actually died, and the movie reveals her different relationships with Bill, Harry and Sam, leading to her pregnancy, and never knowing which of them actually fathered Sophie. Sophie, therefore ends up with three dads!
Sam, Donna’s husband, lives on the island, and Sophie invites her other two dads, and Donna’s two best friends, along with a host of other guests to the opening. And, two surprise guests also arrive, unexpectedly! Sophie’s grandmother, Ruby, who she has never met, and her own boyfriend, Sky.
The movie features a talented all-star cast, including Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, Lily James as the young Donna, Christine Baranski as Tanya, one of Donna’s best friends, Julie Walters as Rosie, her other best friend, Pierce Brosnan as Sam, Colin Firth as Harry and Stellan Skarsgard as Bill. Cameo appearances by Meryl Streep, who played the original Donna, and Cher who plays Ruby, complete the impressive cast.
The singing, dancing and choreography are spectacular and if you like the music of ABBA, as I do,this movie is a treat as it features all their hits.
Released by Universal Studios, the movie opens on 20 July at cinemas countrywide.
Don’t miss it! It’s a really special show.
